We’re
smitten.
Dreamy, airy,
soft yet intense, heavenly mystical vocals paired with a hidden funk
working
way down underneath. say
goodnight
by annabella works like a tremor,
gently waking your
inner senses. A spine tingling swoon that flirts with grunge, baroque
jazz,
soft rock, neo-electronica, synth-pop, and a more modern form of folk
that
updates Americana with a unique, coy, sparse flavoring.
The husband and
wife team of Tim and Terri
Dittmar
have crafted a sound
that resonates with the commotion of life and love, but irons out the
wrinkles
with a spot-on musical composition style that has a way of capturing
us, and
reeling our emotions in to a place of transcendental fascination.
Built around
Terri’s Neko Case style vocals and Tim’s Joni
Mitchell inspired arrangements, say goodnight balances the
presentation of delicate
lushness with rolling up-tempo polish. Representing the former are Sun
is King (drawing us in
for a cosmic experience), Beyond the Trees (a Simon &
Garfunkel acoustic
orchestration with eerie comforting vocals and flute), Bring
You Back To Me (a
beautiful, gorgeous, lump-in-the-throat ballad in which the singer
pours every
ounce of her heart into the longing of lost love using sorrowful
keyboards as
its representation), Carousel (which shatters the
chick on piano
genre), State of Things
(wrapping us in soaring layers of transforming musical eloquence), and
the
title track say goodnight (a solemn death
march hailing the close
of a day/life/relationship and the desire to relive it again).
Interspersed
you’ll find the latter; Rogue Waves (a building,
breaking grunge dalliance
with a down low funk and double tracked harmonies), Just
So You Know (a surreal journey
of sound and voice
that carries its message in a ethereal production), and Peach
Tree (which through an
early
80s British synth pop [Gary Numan, Ultravox, OMD, Spandau Ballet]
delivers the
CDs core message “I am an apologetic
dreamer / you are a believer.” – What
more can we ask from an artist? There
it is, laid bare for us to marvel and awe at the level at which this
couples
oneness achieves).
say goodnight
ends with Peach Tree Remix – Out of
place, yet not – It’s a gem of a remix that takes
the song’s original synth-pop and melds it with a late disco,
early house
style, slowed down to a jam of tranquility with the tag line,
“I am an apologetic dreamer / you
are a believer,”
looped over to make a hypnotic strobe light dance extravaganza to trip
out to…
annabella, mod folk indeed.
Man, we’re
smitten.
